Asia:NZ Foundation/AFS Educator Award

Applications for these awards close 23 March 2010

It is anticipated that In 2010, the Asia:NZ Foundation and AFS will provide three-week teaching scholarships to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India or the Philippines. During their stay, teachers have the opportunity to experience school and home life in Asia.

Educators are given the opportunity to share their skills and learn new ones in educational institutes and live in another culture as a member of a host family, where they will gain a deeper knowledge and respect for cultural differences.

The aim for these teachers is to share and apply their knowledge and skills with their school and the wider community upon their return to New Zealand which can include the production of teaching resources, both paper and web-based.

The partnership between the Asia:NZ Foundation and AFS began in 1996 and the first group of teachers completed their scholarships in 1997.

Confidence in Thai

“In the three weeks I spent in Thailand I felt that my understanding of Thai people and culture was completely enriched. We never just observed, we were always completely immersed in whatever was going on. “ -Joanna Hay

“Expecting the unexpected actually became rather a theme of the trip, creating situations that were sometimes challenging, sometimes hilarious but always wonderful in their own way.” -Michelle Spraggon
